The pool is a wonderful place for your family and pets to enjoy the summer. It’s perfect for cooling down, soaking up the sun, and having fun. However, just like with small children, dogs can be at risk if not properly supervised. Not all dogs are great swimmers,
and not all pools are dog-friendly.
The most important rule for pet pool safety is to never leave your pet unattended around the pool. This can be very dangerous. If your dog is not a strong swimmer, invest in a life jacket to improve buoyancy and visibility, especially for small dogs. Not all dogs can swim naturally; some need training, and for others, it’s nearly impossible.
Identify your dog’s swimming ability early on and take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety and avoid drowning. Older dogs or those with injuries like arthritis may also benefit from wearing a vest. Properly introduce your dog to the water before letting them play. Chlorine can irritate pets’ eyes and skin, so rinse your dog with fresh water after swimming to prevent irritation and damage to your home. Avoid letting your dog drink pool water, as chlorine and other chemicals can cause dry mouth or gastric distress.
These precautions also apply to natural bodies of water like ponds, rivers, and lakes, which, although safer due to better exits and lack of chemicals, can still be harmful. Do not let your dog drink from these sources as they can contain parasites causing gastrointestinal issues that can affect your family. Keep an eye on your dog to ensure they do not ingest harmful objects like dead fish or broken glass.
